According to a study by Borrell Associates, spending for local online spending will increase substantially over the coming year, taking the total to $4.78 billion.

Wondering why companies like Yahoo are fighting so hard to develop not only their local search but also their social networking tools? Big time ad sales are why. Borrell said that local online ad spending will grow from $3.73 billion to $4.78 billion or 28% in the next year.

Burrell predicts paid local search will triple from $347 million to $907 million in 2006. By 2010, local search spending will climb to $.07 billion and will be about 12% of the total $34.81 billion total predicted for the online ad market. Local display will hit about $4.54 billion.

According to the study, one of the most noticeable points and one people should pay attention too are shifts in advertising trends, particularly away from display ads. He warns many companies won't be ready for it, suggesting newspapers make take a beating.
