AOL Says You've Got Free AIM E-mail

A new download of the AIM client to be made available Thursday will include support for the 2GB e-mail service.

In an enhancement for users of its AIM instant messaging service, AOL will make free e-mail accounts available and accessible through the AIM client. Users will have to download updated client software, which will be available Thursday afternoon, to use AIM Mail.

User e-mail addresses will follow a simple format: the username with @aim.com appended to it. AIM Mail will have spam and anti-virus protection, and will include IMAP support so clients like Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac, and Eudora can retrieve messages.

The service offers a single sign-on for both AIM and AIM Mail. Messages sent to AIM or AOL users can be canceled if unread.

With AOL making another free service available, and having lost 500,000 subscribers in the first quarter, the company appears to feel it can boost its fortunes via the Internet advertising market.

Expect to see ads integrated throughout the text messaging, audio chat, and video functions of the AIM client.
